Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.032 Available for 64-bit x86_64 Architecture 20. Aug. 2004 Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.032 is the first version Lineox released for x86_64 in addition to IA32 (known also as i386) architecture. x86_64 release doesn't have GFS (Global File System), but otherwise it has all the programs that IA32 version has. GFS was removed because it confuses the installation program to install additional wrong kernel versions. GFS will however be offered as a part of Lineox Enterprise Linux updates in a similar way as previously added Lineox Application Server. The x86_64 release requires either AMD Opteron or Athlon64 CPU based computer. Some new Intel Xeon and Pentium IV CPU's that have EM64T (Extended Memory 64 Technology) should also be able to run this version. Plenty of Bugs and Limitations Gone DVD versions of Lineox Enterprise Linux are distributed as image files from Apache web server. They are over 2GB in size and must be split to many pieces because the 32-bit versions of Apache can't handle any files bigger than 2GB. This is also a problem for busy sites because log files may grow over that limit. Another example dear to Lineox programmers is mc (Midnight Commander, a Norton Commander clone). It is no longer actively maintained and suffers also from 2GB file size limit. It is however very handy for programmers dealing with rpm packages because you can "dive" in to rpm packages, view the files in them etc. and thus it helps to avoid cluttering disks with many small files. So 64 bits gives a new lease of life to many old programs too. Big file support is also comparatively new code and should therefore have more latent bugs than simpler small file code. "With the already low prices of Athlon64 based computers, I believe Lineox won't buy any more 32-bit machines." Said Raimo Koski, one of the Lineox founders. Availability, Pricing Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.032 x86_64 release is available as free download, but next versions will be available first as paid downloads only. The most recent IA32 release of Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux available for free is 3.011 and new x86_64 releases will be also made free with 3 to 6 months delay. x86_64 pricing will be same as for IA32.
